EXPERIMENTAL TROPICAL M-43

写真は、５ozコットンポプリンを使用したビンテージ・M-43フィールドジャケット。
1940年代初期に製作された「370」プロトタイプにあたるモデルで、CORONAのM-43フィールドジャケットの原点となる存在です。
This vintage M-43 Field Jacket is made from 5oz cotton poplin.
It is based on the early “370” prototype produced in the early 1940s, and represents the original inspiration behind CORONA’s M-43 Field Jacket.

“なぜコットンポプリンが採用されているのか？”

その背景には、前身である“M-41フィールドジャケット”がポプリン素材であったことが挙げられます。その流れを受け、初期のM-43 Experimental（試験品）では軽量なポプリンが流用されていました。ただ、耐久性などの課題から、後に素材はバックサテンへと移行していきます。

一方で、もうひとつの系譜として存在するのが、“Byrd Cloth（バードクロス）”と呼ばれる高密度ポプリンを使用した熱帯仕様のM-43です。
軽量性と通気性、動きやすさ、速乾性などを重視したプロトタイプで、1940年代初期に試験的に開発された“Experimental Tropical Uniform”の一環とされ、高温多湿なベトナムなど、熱帯地域での運用を視野に入れた設計だったと考えられています。

CORONAでは、この後者のストーリーに着目し、“CORONA・M-43 FIELD JACKET”を企画しました。
秋が短く、高温多湿な現在の日本の気候において、重厚なバックサテン製のクラシックなフィールドジャケットとは一線を画し、“軽い着心地と軽やかな雰囲気”を重視した、デイリーウェアとしてのM-43フィールドジャケットです。

CORONA・M-43 フィールドジャケット、27春夏で再登場します！！

Why cotton poplin?
The answer lies in its predecessor, the M-41 Field Jacket, which was made from poplin. Following that lineage, early M-43 experimental models initially adopted lightweight poplin as well. However, due to durability concerns, the material was eventually changed to the heavier cotton back satin used in standard production models.

Another important lineage is the tropical version of the M-43, made from a high-density poplin known as “Byrd Cloth.”
This variant was developed as part of the “Experimental Tropical Uniform” program in the early 1940s, designed with an emphasis on lightness and breathability. It is believed to have been intended for use in hot and humid environments such as Vietnam and other tropical regions.

At CORONA, we drew inspiration from this latter concept in developing the “CORONA M-43 FIELD JACKET.”
In response to Japan’s modern climate—marked by short autumns and hot, humid conditions—this M-43 field jacket is designed as a piece of daily wear, setting itself apart from traditional, heavy back satin field jackets by emphasizing a lighter feel and a more effortless character.
